A very special sofa bed produced in the late 1950's by British company Toothill.
This is an extremely rare early model, and must be one of the most stunning and high quality decorative pieces of mid-century furniture we've ever seen.
The main body of the sofa is constructed from solid afromosia which slots over/screws into a welded metal frame that supports the webbing. The sidetables are also solid afromosia, while the backrest is veneered (possibly walnut). The pipework and legs are copper.
A great feature of the design are the sidetables which slide in and out depending on how you wish to use them. Please note, the sliding mechanism on one sidetable does not move quite as freely as on the other side.
The sofa is in excellent overall condition with only minor wear as is to be expected with a piece of this age.
The sofa has been completely dismantled in order to fit new pirelli webbing. All copper and metal parts have been carefully cleaned.
New foam cushions of the highest quality have been upholstered in a mustard/gold wool from Abraham Moon's new Distinction/Islington collection. The fabric is made from 100% lambswool and is extremely luxurious to touch, but is also very durable, scoring more than 40,000 in the Martindale Test. A sample of the fabric can be provided upon request. The cushion covers are zipped and can be removed in no time for professional cleaning.
As with all our upholstered items, the sofa now complies with the UK Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations.
